First Siddur – Machzorim, Printed in America

6 volume Complete Set!

Complete 6-volume set of siddur and machzorim for daily and year round use, according to the Minhag of Sefardic community with English translation on facing pages. Arranged, edited, and translated by Rabbi Isaac Lisser, shaliach tzibbur of Congregation Mikveh Israel of Philadelphia.

Rabbi Isaac Lisser (1806-1868) emigrated from his native Germany in 1825 and settled in Philadelphia, PA. He served for many years as chazzan and later as Rav of Congregation Mikveh Israel, where he battled to preserve authentic Jewish tradition, fiercely opposed any attempts to introduce change into religious practice, and adopted a stringent stance in his halachic verdicts. He was the first to translate the Torah into English for American Jews without making use of prior translations rendered by gentiles for the New Testament. He also founded the first Hebrew seminary in America in 1847.

This complete set includes all prayers recited throughout the year. Interestingly, Leeser both translated and printed the entire set in a single year, and in order to accelerate the project, actually taught the gentile printers Hebrew so they would be able to assist him in the labor.

Lisser’s siddur and set of machzorim were eagerly received by Jews in America and subsequently used as the basis for future printing of translated sacred works. This siddur includes a prayer for the peace and safety for the American republic.

Philadelphia, 1837. Complete set! Fully intact with all title pages in Hebrew and English.  Old half-leather binding.

Goldman, Hebrew Printing of America, 36.
