Derech Yesharah. Mantua, 1626
Rare historic pamphlet recording the history of Italian Jewry.
This pamphlet encompasses a lengthy verdict by Rabbi Luliano Shalom Cassis regarding the system of taxation in Mantua, Italy.
Throughout many long and divisive years in Mantua, there was a heated debate regarding the division of government taxes between the Italian bankers, who were all distinguished men of affluence, and the merchants and artisans who occupied a lower socioeconomic standing.
In this long, intricate arbitration verdict, Rabbi Luliano Shalom Cassis mediates between the parties and proposes new tax amendments, called Seder Ha’Erka, which would settle a long-awaited end to the decades-old conflict.
The verso of the title page features the power-of-attorney certificate signed by both parties to Rabbi Cassis to act as arbitrator of the debate.
Rabbi Luliano Shalom Cassis (d. 1630) was a prominent rabbi and doctor in Mantua who was highly-regarded among the Italian nobility. He was killed during the expulsion of Jews from Mantua in 1630.
