Notebooks of Torah Novellae by Rosh Yeshivah of Chevron Rabbi Aharon Cohen
Eight notebooks replete with handwritten Torah novellae on a wide range of subjects in Shas, including Seder Kodshim, by Harav Aharon Cohen, Rosh Yeshivah of Chevron.
These novellae were authored over the course of nearly a quarter century, between 1925-1949 in Slabodka, Chevron and Yerushalayim. Some were written during the days preceding and following the Chevron Massacre of 1929.
One notebook contains an essay entitled “Hadran for Siyum Hashas that I delivered on the seventh [day] of Chanukah 5690 (1930).” At the time, Harav Aharon Cohen was in his first year of marriage.
Harav Aharon Cohen (1904-1961) was the son-in-law of Harav Moshe Mordechai Epstein, Av Rosh Yeshivah of Slabodka, and one of the legendary progenitors of the Chevron Yeshivah. He exceptional character, and pious ways. His brother-in-law Harav Yechezkel Sarna often referred to him as an “ish kadosh”, a holy man.
The famous maggid of Yerushalayim Harav Shalom Schwadron recounted that throughout the 37 years that he was acquainted with the Rosh Yeshivah and learned in his midst, he never once heard him utter a word extraneous to Torah or yiras Shamayim.
Harav Aharon’s emotional prayers were legendary. Upon visiting Eretz Yisrael, Harav Aharon Kotler remarked that the entire trip was worthwhile “Just to witness the Chevron Rosh Yeshivah’s tefillos.”
