“This is gravely endangering the continuity of Yeshivos in our country.”

Autographed Letter of Objection and Rebuke by the Brisker Rav to American Rabbis Protesting the Founding of the Federation. Otwock, 1939

Letter by the Brisker Rav – Harav Yitzchak Zev Soloveitchik to Rabbis in New York protesting the founding of the Federation which proposed to concentrate all funds raised in America on behalf of yeshivos in Lithuania and Poland and to distribute it according to their preferences.

In his letter, the Brisker Rav objects to the proposal, since refusing to allow European fundraisers to collect independently in America would reduce income to yeshivos. Moreover, he emphasizes, the primary issue is “Who can hear and not tremble that the fate of Torah institutions in our country will be given to the opinion of individual members of the Federation, which surely now encompasses liberalists and those who do not grasp the value of yeshivos, or the need to uphold and support them.”

He concludes with his heartfelt request. “Please do everything in your power, with strength and valor, so this proposal will not be upheld, and heaven forbid, there should not be destruction to the remnants of our houses of Torah which will extinguish the remaining flames of Torah.”
