Letter of Appeal by Rabbi Baruch Ber Lebowitz Rosh Yeshivah of Kamenitz in Lithuania. Kamenitz, 1937
In this letter, Rabbi Baruch Ber Lebowitz, legendary Rosh Yeshivah of Kamenitz and author of Birkas Shmuel, pens a heartfelt appeal on behalf of his yeshivah and beloved talmidim.
“Baruch Hashem, many new and distinguished students have joined our yeshivah, and they stream to us from across the world, from near and far, even from countries where traveling abroad to learn in yeshivah is a novel concept that never occurred before… All are destined to develop into geniuses and luminaries of our nation… the Yeshivah and our talmidim are in grave financial distress… Hunger is prevalent, and there is no food to give them, not even a slice of bread. Who can remain silent in the face of this…”
He concludes with , “I bless you with all blessings and success.”
Hagaon Rabbi Baruch Ber Lebowitz (1870-1940) was one of the greatest Lithuanian Roshei Yeshivos and Torah luminaries in the pre-WWII era. His lectures attracted the crème de la crème of aspiring Torah scholars for their brilliance, enthusiastic presentation, depth and analysis that culled from the methods of his rebbi, Hagaon Harav Chaim Soloveitchik. Like the latter, he was a man of truth and integrity who favored no one, yet he was simultaneously as gentle and compassionate as a father to his talmidim. His work Birkas Shmuel is considered one of the fundamental lomdishe sefarim and learned extensively in contemporary yeshivos.
