Harav Chanoch Henoch Eigis Hy”d (1864-1941) was one of the leading scholers s in pre-Holocaust Lithuania, whose magnum opus the Marcheshes is still studied in yeshivah world today.
In 1899, he received an appointment as a Rav and dayan in Vilna where he assisted and supported Hagaon Harav Chaim Ozer Grodzinski in his public duties for forty years. In the final year of his life, following the passing of Harav Chaim Ozer, Harav Chanoch Henoch succeeded him as leader of the Rabbanim in Vilna and stood loyally beside the city’s Jews in their hour of calamity.
In the opening of this letter, Harav Chanoch Henoch writes, “My failing eyes do not allow me to write responses to the leaves that you sent, only to the two comments that regard my sefer Marcheshes.”
