The Lubavitch Bichel
In the early days of the Chassidus, Lubavitcher Rebbes rarely published their writings. Instead, the Rebbes developed a unique method of schreibers, scribes and copyists, who would transcribe all what the Rebbe had taught. This method was first utilized in Liozna, birthplace of Lubavitch, and later in Liadi where the Baal Hatanya relocated his Holy Court. The Mitteler Rebbe upheld this tradition in Lubavitch, where he centered the Chassidus and engaged a group of schreibers to transcribe the Torah that he had taught orally.
The Rebbe would deliver his divrei Torah before his chassidim, and after Shabbos or Yom Tov, would relay it in writing to the main schreiber. The latter would then copy the text and return the original manuscript to the Rebbe before proceeding to create several handwritten copies…
A chassid who returned from the Rebbe’s Court with a new dvar Torah from the Rebbe was met enthusiastically by his fellow chassidim who would allow the others to make their own copies of the text. Overtime, chassidim who collected a substantial number of essays would have them binded as a book, which was how the Lubavitch Bichel was created…(ohel rachel liberman vol 3 pg 20-26)
