Shulchan Aruch Harav is regarded as one of the fundamental halachic works. The Baal Hatanya, also known as the Alter Rebbe, commenced the writing of Shulchan Aruch Harav upon the recommendation of his rebbi, – the Maggid of Mezritch, and with encouragement from the ‘holy brothers’ Harav Shmelke of Nikolsburg and the Baal Hafla’ah who were awed by his initial composition and urged him to continue the project (Preface to Vol. 1 by the author’s children).
