Handwritten & Autographed Responsum by Author of Chedvas Yaakov Tzvi Yaakov Meiselish, Av Beis Din of Lask
Harav Tzvi Aryeh Yehuda Yaakov Meiselish (1851-1933) Author of Shu”t Chedvas Yaakov, was the son of Harav Dovid Dov Meiselish, author of Chiddushei HaRadad (son-in-law of the Chavas Daas Harav Elazar Hakohein of Poltosk). Harav Tzvi Yaakov Meiselish, who succeeded his father as Av Beis Din of Lask, was a formidable scholar and kabbalist who was revered as one of the pillars of Torah and halachah in Poland. He is particularly famous for his intense efforts to free agunos after World War One. By the age of seven, he had already debated with the Chiddushei Harim and subsequently traveled to study under Rav Chaim of Sanz. His scholarly work Chedvas Yaakov earned him the esteem of contemporary Torah sages across Poland and Eastern Europe.
In this responsum, Harav Tzvi Yaakov refers to his illustrious grandfather the Chavas Da’as, calling him “Zikni hagaon mi’Lisa, my grandfather, the genius of Lisa.”
