Est. Price: $10,000 - $15,000

Gemara Folio from Tractate Sanhedrin in Ashkenazic Script on Parchment. 13th Century!

Fascinating surviving folio from an ancient 13th century Gemara, of the kind which was used in study houses in France over 800 years ago – the days of the early Rishonim. Perhaps in the Yeshivos of Rashi’s grandchildren, the Baalei Tosfos located in France.

From Tractate Sanhedrin, parallel to what’s known today as daf (pages) 67b-68b/81a-81b, with several variants from the text printed in contemporary gemaros.

The present script style is very similar to the Talmud codex dated 1177 preserved in the Central National Library of Firenza. Which is categorized as Ashkenazic proto-square, which are the oldest dated Ashkenazic manuscripts of this type.

(See attached report.)

Double-sided handwritten folio on parchment with 2 columns per side.
Page size: 24.5x 28cm wide with additional 8.5cm part of another folio attached to it, Marginalia in handwriting from a later era. Stains and several damages.

(Attached: full report by Shlomo Zucker – Manuscript Division of the National Library in Jerusalem.)
