Probizhna Rav Author of Responsa Tzur Yaakov Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Halevi Horowitz zt"l Handwritten & Autographed Postcard
Rabbi Avraham Yaakov Halevi Horowitz (1864-1942), renowned as the Gaon of Probinzhna, was regarded as one of the greatest halachic authorities of his time. He received Rabbinical ordination by the Maharsham and the Kochav Mi’Yaakov, perpetuating their legacy in halachah, authoring many responsa, and engaging in discourse with the venerable scholars of his generation.
In 1889, following the endorsement of the Belzer Rav, he accepted the post of Rav of Probinzhna, a position which he held for over a half century. Among his famous works is his two-volume Shu”t Tzur Yaako
Following the passing of Rabbi Meir Shapiro, he was appointed Rosh Yeshivah of Chachmei Lublin where he delivered shiurim for a short period of time. The Shevet Halevi once remarked:
“There is not a line in the Beis Yosef or Beis Shmuel that he does not know by heart” and the Belzer Rebbe described him as the “
Mezuzah safeguarding Galicia.”
