Handwritten Novellae on Shulchan Aruch by Rabbi Mordechai Dov of Hornosteipel

Novellae and discussion on the laws of interest from Shulchan Aruch Yoreh Deah (ch. 163) in the sacred handwriting of the Admor Harav Mordechai Dov of Hornosteipel, son-in-law of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, excerpted from Turei Zahav on the laws of interest.

The Admor Harav Mordechai Dov of Hornosteipel (1840-1903) was orphaned as a small child and was raised in the home of his grandfather the Admor Harav Yaakov Yisrael of Tcharkas — son of the Admor Harav Mordechai of Chernobyl who was his namesake. By the age of 10, Harav Mordechai Dov was reputed to know some masechtos of Shas, and he was renowned as a genius in Torah who corresponded with the sages of his generation in halachah. When he was 18, he wed the daughter of the Divrei Chaim of Sanz who was effusive in his praises of his son-in-law. In 1863, he was crowned Admor at his grandfather’s behest, and thousands flocked to him to seek his brilliant counsel and blessings.

Among his works are Chibur L’Taharah on Tractate Mikvaos; Responsa Emek She’elah; Turei Zahav on the topic of interest; and Emek Hachochmah on the Torah.
