The Rogotchover & the Rambam
The Rogotchover was an exalted Torah scholar who fathomed the breadth and profound depth of Torah, yet his primary focus in learning was the Rambam. He dedicated countless hours seeking sources for the Rambam’s teachings…In his prolific writings, he regularly referred to the Rambam as ‘Rabbeinu, ’ ‘Rabbeinu Hagadol’ or ‘Rabbeinu Hagadol Hameir Lanu.’ In the second marginal note, he refers to him as ‘Rabbeinu z”l.’ His magnum opus Tzafnas Pa’aneach was compiled based on halachos found in the Rambam.
The Rogotchover was described by one of his distinguished contemporaries, “His diligence is tremendous; he does not rest or stop by night or day, and he learns all of Shas with the Rambam and Rosh three times every year.
One of the Ruzhiner Rebbes described visiting the tzaddik in his home when he was gravely ill: “To surmount his excruciating pain, he would grab hold of the sides of the bed with both hands. Several Torah scholars lingered with him in the room, speaking with him in learning, and every time they referenced the Rambam, the tzaddik’s tribulations and suffering abruptly ceased.
