This edition of Sefer HaZohar was printed in Slavita in two formats (large and small) by the prestigious Shapira family. The smaller edition was printed by the father Harav Moshe Shapira, son of the legendary Rabbi Pinchas of Koritz; and the larger edition was printed by his son Harav Avraham Shmuel Shapira.
“Every man who fears heaven should endeavor to purchase old editions of sefarim that were printed by those who fear Hashem, and especially by the printers in Slavita and Zhitomir, the grandsons of the Rebbe of Koritz” (Shomer Emunim, Taharas Hakodesh Ch. 6)
Volume 2 of this Sefer HaZohar is autographed by the owners:
“Shmuel Zanvil ben Mattel Leah ben Hagaon Hakadosh Moreinu Harav Baruch Avraham of Bardejov, son-in-law of Rabbeinu the Kozhnitzer Maggid, and son-in-law of Rabbeinu the holy Noam Eliemelech ztvk”l, zy”a.”
The autograph belongs to Harav Shmuel Zanvil Bindiger of Bardejov, who later settled in Tzfas. He was the son of Hagaon Harav Baruch Avraham Bindiger, Av Beis Din of Hanishowitz, a disciple of the Kozhnitzer Maggid. Harav Shmuel Zanvil was a son-in-law of Harav Moshe Elyakim Briah of Kozhnitz, son of the Kozhnitzer Maggid. He published his father-in-law’s sefer Binas Moshe (Cracow, 1889) with his own foreword. His son Harav Elazar was the son-in-law of the Shinova Rebbe.
The title page of Vol. 2 also features the autograph of Hagaon Harav Avraham Tzvi Hirsch Friedman, Rosh Yeshivah of Sanz. Harav Avraham Tzvi son of Harav Asher Lemmel, Raavad of Zboriv, was invited by the Maharsham to serve as Rosh Yeshivah in Sanz where he was acclaimed as a genius fluent in all realms of Torah. It is said that he knew the entire sefer Minchas Chinuch by heart!
