Handwritten Manuscript of Safra D’Tzniusa Commentary by the Arizal. Germany, circa 1700.
Beautiful handwritten manuscript in Ashkenazic script originating from the renowned library of Rabbi Daniel Jaffe of Berlin.
Safra D’Tzniusa is attributed to Yaakov Avinu and is one of the earliest fundamental Kabbalistic works. “The Zohar Hakadosh and all of Idra Rabba and Zuta are based on this” (Shaar Safra D’Tzniusa, Vilna, 1821).
While written commentary by the Arizal is exceedingly rare, the content of this kabbalistic work is so fundamental that the Arizal himself authored a commentary on Safra D’Tzniusa.
In the preface, the editor writes that this commentary on Safra D’Tzniusa, which is attributed to the Arizal, was compiled from two original copies–one from Harav Chaim Vital and the other from his contemporary Harav Binyamin Halevi.
This manuscript originates from the library of Rabbi Daniel Jaffe of Berlin (1723-1799) who welcomed illustrious Torah luminaries and tzaddikim as Harav Menachem Mendel of Riminov and the Pri Megadim to learn in his study hall. The Pri Megadim writes that he authored his magnum opus in this very room, with financial assistance by Rabbi Daniel Jaffe of Berlin, a generous philanthropist and patron of Torah scholars who hosted many in his private study hall.
