Pogrom in Posen, 1716

Urgent Appeal for Help Following the Destruction of Posen, 1716. Historic Broadside. Rare!

Heartrending letter of appeal by spiritual leaders of Posen, most notably the Av Beis Din Hagaon Harav Yaakov ben Rav Yitzchak of Posen, following the brutal pogrom and devastation of the Jewish community of Posen.

Numerous Rabbanim and community leaders signed this broadside, each with personal requests for help on behalf of the community. Most famous among them are Harav Dov Ber of Posen (brother-in-law of the Chacham Tzvi and son of Harav Meshulam Zalman Mireles, Av Beis Din of Hamburg) and Harav Yaakov of Posen.

On Friday, 5 Av, 1716, a vicious pogrom was carried out against the Jews of Posen. Thousands of sword-bearing Polish soldiers stormed the Jewish quarter of Posen, attacked the Jewish residents, and massacred them. They injured hundreds and heinously murdered fifty Jews —righteous and pious Kedoshim, men, women and children. Sifrei Torah were torn, and Jewish property was stolen, plundered and pillaged.

The Jews of Posen marked this dark day as one of fasting and atonement for generations, Rabbi Yaakov of Posen, whose signature appears first on the bottom of this appeal, composed a special Selichos that was recited on this day in Posen.
