Harav Shimon Sofer (1850-1944) was the son of the Ksav Sofer and Rav of Erlau for over sixty years. From his early youth, he was renowned for his exceptional piety and righteousness, leading the Belzer Rebbe to refer to him admiringly as ‘Shimon Hatzaddik.’ He was revered by all his contemporary Hungarian sages, and he was offered rabbinical positions both in Budapest and Ungvar, which he declined in order to continue serving his congregation faithfully in Erlau. He perished in Auschwitz at the age of 95
