Anthology of addresses and eulogies in the handwriting of Hagaon Harav Michel Sheier, Av Beis Din of Mannheim, compiled from lectures delivered on Shabbosos and Yomim Tovim of 1784-1786 to the Jewish congregation in Mannheim, Germany.
This anthology comprises 42 discourses, among them 8 poignant eulogies upon Torah luminaries. One is a lengthy elegy upon the Shaagas Aryeh.
Page 40a is a moving elegy upon his own father Hagaon Harav Tevele Sheier, Av Beis Din of Mainz, who also taught the Chasam Sofer.
Hagaon Harav Michel Sheier (1739-1809) served as Av Beis Din of Mannheim and Worms, Rosh Yeshivah of Mainz, and numbered among the leading Torah sages in his generation.
Teacher of the Chasam Sofer
The Chasam Sofer studied in the Yeshivah of Mainz under Harav Michel Sheier. Following the passing of the tzaddik, the Chasam Sofer established a public day of mourning, eulogies and spiritual fortification, as recounted in his writings: “For we established a day of mourning upon the passing of the Gaon and mentor of my youth Moreinu Harav Michel Sheier zt”l, Av Beis Din of Mannheim, who is renowned for his brilliance… During the years 1776 and 1777, I stood before him when he served as Rosh Yeshivah in Mainz
