The Optimal Method of Torah Study: Expansion and Concentration

A lengthy responsa replete with chiddushei Torah by Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Hutner zt”l, author of the Pachad Yitzchak, regarding topics of meilah, parah adumah, pidyon maaser sheini, etc.

With his razor-sharp definitions, Harav Hutner opens his letter with a brilliant analysis and summary of a kuntress received from a student. “I found within it two conflicting, yet complementary attributes. On one hand, there is wide breadth presented in the scope of the topics and on the other hand, concentration of in-depth analysis on the point of discussion. These two aspects of expansion and concentration create a strong impression on the learner.”

Hagaon Harav Yitzchak Hutner (1906-1981) was one of the leading Roshei Yeshivos of the previous century who taught and disseminated Torah and mussar to thousands. A student of the Slabodka and Chevron yeshivos, he gained repute as a genius at a very young age. His very first work Toras Nazir, published in Warsaw in 1932, catapulted him to fame among his fellow scholars. In 1939, he was appointed Rosh Yeshivah of Yeshivas Rabbi Chaim Berlin in the United States, and his brilliant essays and lectures were compiled into the celebrated series Pachad Yitzchak.

New York, 1936. 3 pages. Typewritten and signed by Harav Yitzchak Hutner. Preserved in its original envelope.

This letter was printed in the Sefer Zichron (memorial book) Ch. 86 published by Machon Yerushalayim in honor of the Pachad Yitzchak excluding the opening paragraph mentioned above.
