Letter by Harav Eliyahu Dessler, Author of Michtav Me’Eliyahu, Requesting Help in Deciphering Rabbinical Scripture. London, 1935.
During a visit to the London Beis Din, Harav Eliyahu Dessler discerned handwritten inscriptions on the famous siddur of Harav Shabsai Sofer and was asked to help decipher the authors’ identities. Harav Dessler successfully identified several of the signatures and subsequently appealed to his cousin Harav Eliyahu Eliezer Skolsky, a celebrated bibliographer for assistance in identifying the remaining inscriptions.
Hagaon Harav Eliyahu Dessler (1892-1952) was one of the foremost geniuses and Jewish thinkers of the 20th century, a baal mussar whose lessons on hashkafah are studied in yeshivos until this very day. In 1927, he settled in London and lived there until he was summoned by the Ponoviczer Rav to serve as mashgiach in his yeshivah in Bnei Brak. His popular series Michtav Me’Eliyahu is one of the foundational works of contemporary mussar.
