Letter by Rosh Yeshivas Mir Harav Chaim Shmuelevitz Regarding Visas for the Talmidim in Shanghai & Handwritten List of Talmidim. Shanghai, 1946.
Historic Letter!
“The Canadians are waiting for the boat; the paperwork from the United States has yet to bear fruit; Eretz Hakodesh is locked, Hashem yerachem.”
In these brief lines, Harav Chaim Shmuelevitz, Rosh Yeshivas Mir in Shanghai, summarizes the sorry state of the Mir Yeshivah refugees in Shanghai anxiously awaiting the end of their six-year-long exile and fervent hopes to reach Eretz Yisrael, Canada and the United States.
The letter is written on official Yeshivah stationery printed during its years in Shanghai. The letterhead bears the name of the city ‘Shanghai.’
Attached to the letter is the Rosh Yeshivah’s handwritten list of 51 talmidim—“The Canadian List” which recorded the names of those eagerly awaiting receipt of Canadian visas.
Included in this list of students are several Mir alumni who developed into leading Torah sages and baalei mussar in Eretz Yisrael and America of the past generation: Harav Chaim Shmuelevitz’s future son-in-law Harav Nochum Partzovitz; Harav Aryeh Leib Malin; Harav Dovid Kronglas, Rosh Yeshivah of Ner Israel in Baltimore; Harav Chaim Millikovsky, father of the Amshinover Rebbe shlit”a; the mashgiach Harav Chaim Wissoker; Harav Yosef Liss; Harav Aryeh Leib Baskt of Detroit; and Harav Shmuel Vilensky (Charkover), to name just a few.
The list also includes several talmidim from Yeshivos in Kamenitz, Kletzk and Novardok.
The second part of the letter mentions other issues regarding the refugees and the Amshinover Rebbe who was present with them in Shanghai.
