Handwritten, Autographed letter by the Skulener Rebbe Harav Eliezer Zusia Portugal

The Goal of Our Efforts is to Rescue the Children… We Must Accept Everyone!! to Yeshivah

In this letter, the Skulener Rebbe clarifies that he wishes to accept children of every age and from every background into his Yeshivah, and that he does not wish to accept the elite young men who have more than enough prospects for yeshivah education. His Yeshivah, he expresses, is intended to embrace those who were not fortunate to be educated in Torah institutions, and he rejects any background conditions for acceptance..

The Rebbe asks one of his faithful followers to travel across the Upper Galilee, appeal to parents, and urge them to send their children to his yeshivah that would be founded in Meron on behalf of the children of refugees of Communist countries.

He expresses, “Just as the Torah writes of Avraham Avinu, ‘The souls that they made in Charan, ’ so we shall fulfill ‘The souls that they made in Meron, ’ in the merit and with the help of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai.”

The Skulener Rebbe Harav Eliezer Zusia Portugal (1898-1982) was a distinguished Torah luminary who was well-versed in Shas and halachah. He founded his beis medrash in Chernowitz and endeavored greatly on behalf of Romanian Jewry, specifically war refugees. His shelter was open to all, and he took from his own mouth to feed destitute children and marry them off to wealthy families.

In 1960, he emigrated from Romania to the United States where he founded the legendary Chesed L’Avraham Institutions, which were dedicated to the rescue of Jewish refugee children from Romania, Transylvania, Bukovina, and Marmarush.

New York, 1966. Written on official stationery of Chesed L’Avraham Institutions, founded by the Skulener Rebbe in support of refugee children. The top of the letter features a letter on behalf of the Rebbe by his gabbai, and this is followed by a handwritten, autographed appeal by the Rebbe himself.
