Appointment of Harav Yaakov Meir as Rishon Letzion with Approval by Leaders & Members of the Sephardic Communit’y in Jerusalem, 1907.
Historic Document
Following the passing of the Rishon Letzion the Yisa Brachah in Elul of 5666 (1816), Harav Yaakov Meir was appointed the new Rishon Letzion and Chacham Bashi (Chief Rabbi). His inauguration ceremony was attended by the vast majority of leaders, Rabbinate and members of the Sephardic community, although several community dignitaries and activists who objected to his appointment were notably absent. The latter appealed to the Ottoman authorities in Constantinople to revoke the appointment, and the Rabbinical polemics stirred great dispute and conflict among the Sephardic community in Jerusalem.
In their letter to the rabbis in Constantinople, community lay leaders and dignitaries in Jerusalem write that the nomination was conducted in a fair and legal manner, that there is none more worthy of the title in all of Jerusalem than Hagaon Harav Yaakov Meir, and they request approval for his appointment.
The letter is signed by approximately 100 members of Jerusalem’s Sephardic community.
