Personal diary of Shalom Moshe Hakohein Doueck of Calcutta.

Includes fascinating documentation and personal records written in the local Jewish-Arabic dialect, with some in foreign languages. The diary spans a period of 14 years and mentions the names of hundreds of Indian Jews.

This diary was not sufficiently researched, yet there is no doubt that it is a historic treasure, providing broad, in-depth understanding of Indian Jewry of that era.

The Doueck family numbered among the first Jewish settlers in India. The author’s grandfather Harav Moshe ben Shimon Doueck Hakohein of Aleppo arrived in Calcutta in 1807 and also authored a detailed journal and diary recounting his exploits there.

This manuscript was dispatched in 1949 to the acclaimed Jewish collector R’ Suleiman David Sassoon by his aunt Rachel Ezra of Calcutta. (Her letter is attached.)
