On Erev Yom Kippur of 1929, two Lubavitch chassidim placed a pushkeh in the synagogue of Lubavitch chassidim ‘For the Zionist activities’. When word of the incident reached the Raayatz, he reacted in fervent protest.

The Admorim and leaders of Chabad-Lubavtich were traditionally opposed to Zionism and all Zionist activities. In this letter, the Raayatz, Harav Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson writes that although he’d preferred to ignore the incident altogether, his primary distress was “How did the situation deteriorate that every man does as he pleases” without regarding the opinion and values of our fathers and holy Rabbanim?

The printed letter omits the names of the errant chassidim. Printed in Igros Kodesh Vol. 13 Letter 4, 1929.
