Mikrah Kodesh Society Journal. Chicago, 1895.

Exquisite Illustrated Ledger

Mikrah Kodesh Society was established by older Russian Jewish immigrants who had settled in Chicago in the late 19th century and wished to devote their golden years to prayer, learning and service of Hashem.

The journal’s title page is embellished with leaves, flowers and golden letters, followed by a preface and the society’s Code. The Code is preceded by a decorative border featuring verses of prayer in folk calligraphy.

The top of each journal page notes the name of a member surrounded by a border of leaves and embellishments in vivid watercolors. Every name has a distinct border, for a total of
70 unique illustrated borders!

The journal opens with a captivating preface in which the society’s members express their gratitude to Hashem for rescuing them from the evil Russian kingdom and
“Bringing them to the American country, a land of freedom and liberty…where nothing is lacking and where no one hungers for bread or thirsts for water…”

The society’s Code encompasses the set order of prayer, Jewish customs and rituals, and membership rules. The latter requires all society members to identify themselves as Orthodox and arbitrate disputes among members privately. It also lists the rights and commitments of the members.

The preface and Code were compiled by Avely Lane, a renowned Chicagoan doctor.

67 written sides; the remaining pages (approx. 200) are blankes. Page size: 19×31 cm. Original fabric binding, worn and damaged.
