“THIS SEFER BELONGS TO THE MIRACLE-WORKER, THE HOLY ADMOR, THE TZADDIK WHO IS RENOWNED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE WORLD… RABBI YESHAYA STEINER”
Personal Copy of Sefer “Halachos Ketanos” Belonging to Rabbi Shaya’le of Kerestir
Responsa Halachos Ketanos authored by Rabbi Yaakov Yisrael Chagiz – the very sefer owned and used by Reb Shaya’le Kerestirer.
Reb Shaya’le’s red wax seal appears on the inner side of the back cover and is almost entirely intact. The words are clearly legible:
“The humble Shaya Kesrestirer.”
There is a long and detailed owner’s listing on the flyleaf stating that the sefer belonged to Rabbi Shaya’le of Kerestir.
There is a signature on the title page from Reb Shaya’le’s son and successor,
Rabbi Avraham Steiner. There is also a seal from
Rabbi Reuven Chaim Klein, son-in-law of Reb Shaya’le and author of Mateh Reuven.
The name
“Shaya Steiner Kerestir” written in Hungarian was likely written in the hand of Reb Shaya’le himself.
Rabbi Yeshaya Steiner of Kerestir (1851–1925), known by all as “Reb Shaya’le Kerestirer, ” was renowned as a pillar of charity and kindness. His home was open to all; he hosted many guests at his meals and distributed large sums to charity. He was a close disciple of Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch of Liska and was ordained by the Admorim of Sanz and Nadvorna. His name spread far and wide as a holy miracle-worker, bringing thousands to his door for help and salvation. To this day, thousands of Jews flock to his grave to pray for help, guidance and salvation.
