Rare Autograph Collection of Documents and Certificates Signed by Leading Hungarian Rabbis; 1853–1884
Large handwritten collection from the rabbis of various Hungarian communities, including disciples of prominent figures such as the Baruch Tam, Chassam Sofer, Maharam Banet and others.
The collection includes birth certificates, marriage licenses and other documents that the rabbis of these communities had the authority or were mandated to issue and sign. The documents are all written in foreign languages.
1. Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch Oppenheim, author of Einei HaDaas against the Reform Rabbi Aharon Churiner. He discoursed with the Chassam Sofer. [Document dated 1858]
2. Rabbi Pinchas Katz was a scholarly Kabbalist and author of Minchas Pittim. He discoursed with the Baruch Taam. [1870]
3. Rabbi Avraham Yechezkel Reich was the ab”d of Bannewitz and the son of Rabbi Kappel Charif, ab”d of Werbau. He authored Toras Yechezkel. [Document dated 1867]
4. Rabbi Pesach Singer was the ab”d of Plata and Kirchdorf. The Ksav Sofer greatly admired him and said in jest that “there is no ‘pesach sheini’ in these times” meaning that there was no one like him.
5. Rabbi Elazar Furst was the ab”d of Diandiash. He was the son-in-law of Rabbi Eliezer Lipman Stein, author of Ir Shushan. [Document dated 1856]
6. Rabbi Moshe Yehuda Kutna was the son of Rabbi Aharon Kutna and served as the ab”d of Sabadka. He authored Mishpat Tzedek. [Document dated 1891]

Rabbi Eliyahu Moshe Katz was the ab”d of Petzel. He discoursed with the Chassam Sofer. [Document dated 1872]
