Signed Letter from Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund and Satmar Dayanim Addressed to the Rabbis of Jerusalem; Satmar, 1946

Letter addressed to Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Dushinsky, signed by Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund and other Satmar dayanim.

The letter discusses the dayanim’s opinions regarding an ongoing din Torah.

Rabbi Moshe Aryeh Freund (1902-1996) was the grandson of Rabbi Yehoshua Fruend, Rav and Admor of Unterdam and Nassod. He was known for his holiness and piety. He served as ab”d of Nassod prior to World War II and lost his wife and eight children in the Holocaust. After the war, he was appointed dayan in Satmar where he led the beis din in dealing with the many agunim and agunos left in the wake of the war. He later became the gab”d of Jerusalem.

Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Friedman was the son of Rabbi Yisrael Chaim Friedman, author of Likutei Maharich”. He was renowned as a pious and elevated scholar and admired by the rabbis of his time. Rabbi Yoel of Satmar writes in his endorsement: “… It was known to everyone that he was full of Torah and righteousness, very devout and elevated, and fear of Heaven lit up his face… and he was close to the sages of his generation…” Rabbi Shlomo Zalman was a prized disciple of the Kedushas Yom Tov of Sighet and enjoyed a close relationship with the Atzei Chaim as well. Following the Holocaust, he served as ab”d in Lugano, Switzerland.

Rabbi Avraham Tzvi Weiss (1902-1979) served as a dayan in Satmar prior to World War II and later as the first rabbi of the Nevei Achiezer neighborhood in Bnei Brak.
