Rare Remnant from the Imrei Emes Library

Manuscript: Idra Zuta by the Zohar; Spalatro–Yugoslavia, 1856

Manuscript of the Idra Zuta by the holy Zohar, describing the passing of Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, originating from the famed library of the Imrei Emes of Gur.

The Imrei Emes possessed a large, prominent library packed with many rare sefarim. In 1901, a raging fire spread throughout the city, consuming the library, but the Imrei Emes quickly began to rebuild it anew. Later, during the Holocaust years, the great library was destroyed save for a few surviving volumes which made their way to Eretz Yisrael.

This rare manuscript is one of the few surviving remnants of this prominent library.

The manuscript was written in large, square lettering with nekudos. The title page is decorated with a decorative border.
It is noted on the title page: “This sefer… was copied over here in Spalatro by… Raphael the son of Rabbi Yosef Finso for…

Daniel Moshe Chai Yeshurun.”

Finso and Yeshurun were both well-known families in Spalatro.

This manuscript originated in Spalatro, Yugoslavia, 1856.
