Originally Tibetan Text Translated on Behalf of the King of China


Manuscript of Derech Ish Yashar, containing directives for the proper way to interact with oneself and with others. 

This manuscript was found in the archives of Tibet in East India and was made available to the public at the behest of the King of China. Abraham ibn Rofa then copied it over from the Indian language to Lashon HaKodesh.

Hebrew manuscripts from India – particularly from this time period – are rare.

The copy was created in Calcutta, India in the year 1823, as specified on the title page.

There is a signature on the title page from Rabbi Elazar Aharon HaCohen Araki, the rabbi, shochet u’bodek and cantor of Calcutta. In 1841 he established the well-known printing press of Calcutta.
