Letter from Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky Toronto, 1939

Handwritten and signed letter from Rabbi Yaakov Kaminetzky addressed to Rabbi Yechezkel Sarna, Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron.
In his letter, Rabbi Yaakov requests that mussar essays from the Alter of Slabodka be sent to him.
Written on personal stationery, this letter was written during Rabbi Yaakov’s tenor as rabbi in Toronto. Letters from Rabbi Yaakov written during this time period are rare.

Rabbi Yaakov Kaminetzky (1891 – 1986) was one of the illustrious leaders of American Jewry in the last generation. A brilliant scholar, he was a student of great Lithuanian rabbis such as the Alter of Slabodka, Rabbi Baruch Ber Leibowitz and Rabbi Isser Zalman Meltzer. At the age of fifteen he began learning in the Slabodka Yeshiva and married the daughter of the Mashgiach, Rabbi Dov Tzvi Heller. He served as rabbi of several cities in Lithuania and as Rabbi of Toronto between 1938 – 1945. He was the Rosh Yeshiva of Mesivta Torah Vadaath and one of the founders of the Moetzes Gedolei Hatorah in America, as well as of
the Chinuch Haatzmai. He authored Emes LeYaakov on Torah, Talmud and Shulchan Aruch.
