Letter to Sir Moses Montefiore from Rabbi Yahoshua Heschel Shapira, AB"D of Szczuczyn, and His Community

Letter dated Šakiai, 1864, written by Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira and his community, addressed to the great Sir Moses Montefiore.
The letter begins with words of praise and blessing and concludes with the signatures of the community Rabbi, the dayanim – Rabbi Zev HaCohen and Rabbi Tzvi Bloch and twenty-five additional signatures, including that of Rabbi Yaakov Bachrach, son of Rabbi Yehuda Bachrach.
Rabbi Yehoshua Heschel Shapira was the Av Beis Din of Šakiai (of the Suwalki district) and later of Szczuczyn (of the Lomza district). A tremendous rabbi and scholar,
the Chofetz Chaim requested an endorsement from him for his sefer Likutei Halachos.

He served as president of the Suwalki – Lomza Kollel and was close to Rabbi Yehshua Leib Diskin. His ideas and endorsements are found among various sefarim brought to print during his time period.
