Urgent Letter from Rabbi Amram Blau to the Admor Rabbi Yoel of Satmar Regarding the Desecration of the Rambam’s Grave

Long letter regarding the archeological desecration of Tveria’s cemetery, handwritten and signed by Rabbi Amram Blau, leader of the Neturei Karta.
Dated the 17th of Adar, 1956, the letter is addressed to Rabbi Yoel of Satmar and is signed by Rabbi Hillel Schlesinger as well.

“…The terrible and disgraceful deed that the apostate Zionists have done in the cemetery of the Rambam in Tveria… With a destruction machine, which they call a ‘bulldozer, ’ they will destroy the tombs of… our holy tzaddikim. They will take apart their corpses and crush their bones and take out the stone coffins of the dead and cast them under the sun…

May G-d be at [your] assistance… to stand at the helm of the fighters of this G-dly war against the Amalek of our generation, and may he merit to weaken Amalek…”

Background: In 1956, archeological construction commenced in the properties of the Tveria cemetery, the burial site of the Rambam and other holy sages going back to the time of the Tanaim. In response to this desecration, the ‘Neturei Karta, ’ led by Rabbi Amram Blau, organized protests throughout Jerusalem and Tveria, arousing a great stir. Eventually, their efforts paid off and work in the area was terminated.
