Letter from the Holy Maharsham; Brezhany, 1903
Letter from Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaCohen Schwadron of Brezhany, author of Responsa Maharsham, requesting assistance from Kollel Hungary for his son in Jerusalem.
The Maharsham’s son, Rabbi Yitzchak, was the author of Minchas Yitzchak on Tosefta. The Maharsham writes that while his son had once been very wealthy, “the wheel [of fortune] turned on him and he lost all of his wealth and possessions.” The Maharsham had heard that Kollel Hungary had apartments in Jerusalem intended for scholarly immigrants and as such requests their assistance in obtaining an apartment for Rabbi Yitzchak.
Written on personal stationery, the letter is completely handwritten and signed by the Maharsham himself and is addressed to Rabbi Eliezer Pollak, Rabbi of Pest.
Rabbi Shalom Mordechai HaCohen Schwadron (1835 – 1911), known as the Maharsham, was renowned as one of the greatest respondents of his time. Complicated Halachic questions were regularly directed to him, and already in his youth, the Shaul U’Meishiv looked upon him as his spiritual successor. The Maharsham served as Rabbi of Potok, Yoslovitch, and finally in Brezhany. He remained in Brezhany for thirty years until his passing in 1911.
