Rare Surviving Letter from Rabbi Nachum Mordechai of Chortkov I, Eldest Son of Rabbi David Moshe Chortkov; 1869
Handwritten and signed letter from Rabbi Nachum Mordechai Friedman addressed to his mother Rebbetzin Faiga, daughter of Rabbi Aharon of Chernobyl.
In the letter Rabbi Nachum Mordechai updates his mother regarding the welfare of his father and brother and promises to send a letter every day!
Rabbi Nachum Mordechai passed away at a very young age and as such, letters from him are exceptionally rare.
Rabbi Nachum Mordechai Friedman (184? – 1870) was the oldest of Rabbi David Moshe of Chortkov’s two sons. Already in his youth, Rabbi Nachum Mordechai stood out for his exceptional holiness and piety despite his weakened state of health. He married the daughter of his uncle, Rabbi Shalom Yosef of Ruzhin, and passed away young in 1870, during the lifetime of both his father and grandfather. The Admor Rabbi Yisrael of Chortkov mourned the passing of his brother, Rabbi Nachum Mordechai, bitterly and wept at the funeral that while his father still had another son, he was now left with no brother.
