Chalitza Contract Approved and Signed by the Machane Chaim, Rabbi Chaim Sofer; Yemring, 1858

Chalitza document in which a man’s brothers commit to perform chalitza for their brother’s wife in the event of his passing without leaving behind children.
The witnesses and brothers signed their names at the bottom of the contract. Rabbi Chaim Sofer signs twice on the existence of the two aforementioned signatures.
Rabbi Chaim Sofer (1821 – 1886), known as the Machane Chaim, was circumcised on Yom Kippur by the Chassam Sofer and later entered his yeshiva at the young age of eleven. He went on to become one of the Chassam Sofer’s prized disciples who would continue his legacy in his fight against reform and change to authentic Judaism. He was looked upon as a leading rabbinical figure in Hungary and served as Av Beis Din of Yemring,   Munkatch and the Khal Yerei’im community of Budapest. He accepted the last position in Budapest after the Chassam Sofer appeared to him in a dream and commanded him to do so. He authored Machane Chaim – 8 parts, among other sefarim.
