Emotional Letter by Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman to Save Orphaned Girl from Attending Public School

Letter from Rabbi Elchonon Wasserman on behalf of an orphaned girl from Baranowicze, requesting that she receive financial assistance to enable her to learn in the Beis Yaakov Teacher’s Seminary of Krakow by Frau Sara Schenirer.

"I request that you enroll the orphan… daughter of a poor widow who dedicates her life to steer her offspring in the path of G-d… that she should not go to a different school…"
The letter is handwritten and signed by Rabbi Elchonon on a letterhead from the Ohel Torah Yeshiva in Baranowicze, dated the 13th of Teves, 1936.

Rabbi Elchonon Bunem Wasserman (1875 – 1941) served as the Rosh Yeshivah of Ohel Torah in Baranowicze and was a leading Torah figure in prewar Lithuania. He fought alongside the Chofetz Chaim to protect Orthodox Judaism and was an active member of Agudas Yisrael. His sefarim, Kovetz He’aros and Kovetz Shiurm, as well as his hashkafos (worldview) are a cornerstone of the yeshivah world today.
