Letter Signed by Leadership of Kollel Prushim-Vilna Headed by Rabbi Avraham Abale, Av Beis Din of Vilna; 1822
Impressive letter from the treasures and administrators of Vilna’s Prushim Kollel addressed to an organization in Amsterdam.
The letter includes a brief discussion as well as an apology to the Amsterdam officials aomng other matters. The Ashkenazic rabbinical emissaries Rabbi Avraham Shlomo Zalman Tzoref and Rabbi Chanoch Zundel ben Rabbi Tzvi Hirsch are also mentioned.
The letter is signed by:
Rabbi Avraham Abale (1762 – 1832), Av Beis Din of Vilna, was a Torah giant and leader of the Lithuanian rabbinate beginning in the year 1804. A rabbinical pillar of Lithuania, he was addressed from all corners of the country. The author of Nitei Ne’emanim wrote: "
After the Gaon of Volozhin (R’ Chaim)
we had no one, but we had this one Rabbi Avraham in our midst, in whose shadow we shall live."
Rabbi Aryeh Leib ben Rabbi David Ber, known by all as "R’ Leibli R’ Berish, " was a prominent Vilnius philanthropist who was held in high regard by Vilna’s rabbis.
Rabbi Meshulam Zalman, known as "R’ Zalman R’ Uri’s, " was a giant of Torah and philanthropy. He founded the Ramailis Yishiva of Vilna alongside Rabbi Abale.
On the back side of the letter there is a wax seal from Rabbi Aryeh Liva with an image of a lion.
