Interesting Letters from Rabbi David Halpern, Son-in-law of the Maharash Engel of Radomyśl, and from His Young Son Rabbi Elchanan (Chunah) Halpern
Handwritten letter from Rabbi David Halpern written in Kashau, 1939, requesting assistance in obtaining American visas for him and his family. It is apparent that already then, Rabbi David sensed the imminent danger.
In his letter, Rabbi David mentions his
"eldest son who is already seventeen, and is thank G-d… a big Torah scholar…, " referring to Rabbi Elchanan (Chunah) Halpern of London.

Rabbi David Halpern (1897 – 1945), Av Beis Din of Dobczyce, was a son-in-law of the illustrious Rabbi Shmuel Engel of Radomyśl. He lived by him for fifteen year and assisted him in the editing and printing of his responsa. He passed away following his liberation from a German forced labor camp.
Rabbi Elchanan Chunah Halpern studied by his illustrious grandfather, Rabbi Shmuel Engel, and immigrated to London in 1938. There, he became close to Rabbi Shalom of Shotz. Following his marriage, he established the Beis Shmuel
beis midrash of London and served for a time as Rabbi of Golders Green and President of the Hisachdus Kehillas HaChareidim.
