"I WAS ELECTED RABBI, AV BEIS DIN, IN THE GREAT CITY LUBLIN" – Historic Autograph by Rabbi Meir Shapiro of Lublin, Announcing His Appointment as Rabbi of Lublin
Rare letter handwritten by the renowned Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin, founder of Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin and creator of the Daf HaYomi, regarding his appointment as Rabbi of Lublin
Written in Sivan of 1931, Rabbi Meir writes:
"…It has surely been publicized that I have been elected rabbi, Av Beis Din of the great city Lublin… and I have already moved my dwelling place here."
Rabbi Meir also describes the fledgling Yeshivas Chachmei Lublin:
"The holy yeshiva develops from day to day in giant steps, and it is a public sanctification of G-d’s name…"
This historic letter was entirely handwritten and signed by Rabbi Meir himself on personal letterhead from the beginning of his tenure as rabbi of Lublin.
Rabbi Meir Shapira of Lublin (1887 – 1933) was a renowned Torah scholar and famed rabbi, Av Beis Din, and Rosh Yeshiva of the highly prestigious Yeshivas Cachemei Lublin. He became world renowned as the creator of the Daf HaYomi and was one of the founders of the Agudas Yisrael as well. He was known by all as a pillar of
chessed and kindness and was a loyal delegate of the Polish parliament.
Although he passed away childless, Rabbi Meir would say that he had two children: The Daf HaYomi and Yeshivas Cachemic Lublin.
