The” Sfas Emes “of Ger  Autograph letter  Requesting Assistance for His Brother Rabbi Shlomo
"My friend Rabbi Mendle, I ask of you…to speak with Rabbi Leizer as well, so that he should assist my brother Shlo[mo] with the [money] which he needs for the deal he made with Rabbi Leibush…I ask that you hurry the matter for he wishes to travel on his way. Your friend, Aryeh Leib."
Autograph letter from the Sfas Emes requesting assistance for his younger brother, Rabbi Shlomo Alter.
The letter was entirely handwritten by the Sfas Emes in purple ink and is a total of five lines, which was customary of the Sfas Emes.
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Alter of Gur (1847 - 1905) was the grandson and successor of the Chidushei Harim of Gur, patriarch of the Gur dynasty. He was appointed Admor at the young age of nineteen but refused to accept the leadership until the year 1870. Under his guidance, the Gur dynasty blossomed into the largest chassidus in all of Poland. The Sfas Emes was looked upon as one of the greatest admorim of his time, titled "King of Yisrael" by great Chassidic leaders. His unique style of learning and his interpretation of Chazal captured the hearts of many with his sefarim becoming a cornerstone of Torah literature.
Rabbi Shlomo Alter was a holy and righteous tzaddik and shared a close relationship with his holy brother, the Sfas Emes. Demonstrating their close bond, the Sfas Emes once wrote to him, "If only I had an older brother who loved me as much as I love you…"
Although the Sfas Emes's full name was Yehuda Aryeh Leib, following his marriage with the daughter of Rabbi Yehuda Leib Kaminer, he dropped "Yehuda" from his signature, so as not to be called by the same name as his father-in-law as stipulated in the will of Rabbi Yehuda HaChassid.
