"THEY SHOULD NOT INTERVENE IN THE LEADERSHIP OF THE TORAH INSTITUTIONS…" – Letter from Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneerson of Lubavitch Regarding Mandatory Education Law

Letter signed by Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch with added words of blessing and success, "
in materialism and spiritualism, " handwritten by him.

In his signature, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak wrote the
"yud" of his name Yitzchak in Assyrian lettering. This interesting signature was his customary way of signing during the last year of his life, andhe did so for Kabbalistic reasons.

Dated the 5th of Iyer, 1949, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak writes:
"(Regarding) the law of mandatory education, they should not intervene in the leadership of the Torah institutions and educations, and they should not force them to make any changes in their learning and education, for if not, a grave danger hovers above their spiritual foundation, heaven forbid.

"According to this, I would like to request that you inform me immediately if they also know of anything regarding the aforementioned, and what is being done by them in order to ensure the existence of Torah institutions and education in their proper spiritual essence, with G-d’s help."

The Law of Mandatory Education came into effect in the year 1949 and was one of the very first laws enacted by the newly independent State of Israel. This law greatly worried the religious population who were afraid of unwanted intervention by the Zionistic government into their Torah institutions.
