Army Recruitment Enlistment of Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv zt"l

Certificate of Reporting at the Jerusalem Recruiting Center issued to Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv in 1948, including his personal information. The certification was issued by the "Central Command for the Service of the People" of the National Agency and National Committee.

Shortly before the establishment of the State of Israel, a law for compulsory recruitment was enacted alongside the "Toraso Umnaso" Law, which granted yeshiva students exemption from military service and other exemptions due to social reasons.

The system in place required yeshiva students to report at the recruitment centers upon where they would receive an immediate delay based on various criteria.
Rabbi Yosef Shalom reported on the 24th of November, 1948, in the Jerusalem Conscription Center and received a service exemption.

The certificate he was issued includes personal information such as his year of birth, height, marital status, children, address, occupation, job location and reason for his exemption. It is complete with a photo of him (at age 38) and bares his full signature.
