Autograph Letter from Rabbi Shimon Sofer – Son of the Chassam Sofer
"HE IS WORTHY OF BEING CALLED "TEACHER OF TEACHERS." HE IS LIKE NO OTHER…"
Letter Defending Rabbi Baruch Mendel Wolff of Bochnia from Rabbi Shimon Sofer, Av Beis Din of Krakow.
A handwritten letter from Rabbi Shimon Sofer, defending Rabbi Baruch Mendel Wolff, Av Beis Din of Bochnia, against appellants for his rabbinate in his community.
"I was frightened to see… that there is no peace in his city and that he needs my endorsement, for he is worthy of being called 'Teacher of Teachers.' He is like no other, may there be more like him in Israel. He is worthy of his name through his Torah and wisdom, and G-d will make peace for him and all of His people…"
In the margin near his signature, Rabbi Shimon added his and his mother's names: Shimon ben Sorel.
Rebbetzin Sorel was the righteous wife of the holy Chassam Sofer and daughter of Rabbi Akiva Eiger.
Rabbi Shimon Sofer (1820 – 1883) was the son of the Chassam Sofer and continued his legacy and customs. He was one of the prominent rabbinical leaders of his generation and actively took action in easing the plight of Jews in the Diaspora and strengthening religion. A brilliant scholar, he was well-versed in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah. He served first as Av Beis Din of Mattersdorf and later as rabbi of Krakow. He authored Responsa Michtav Sofer.
