First Edition Kli Yakar on the Torah, Lublin 1602

Sefer Kli Yakar, one of the most prominent treatises on the Chamisha Chumshei Torah, containing literal, homiletic and mussar explanations by Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Lunschitz. This first edition was published in Lublin, 1602.

Already in Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim's days the prominence of his incredible sefer was recognized. So much so, that the rabbinical leaders of shalosh artzos took upon themselves the costs of printing in order to see it published – something that had never happened before or since. Today, the Kli Yakar commentary has become an inseparable part of the Mikraos Gedolos chumashim.
Rabbi Shlomo Ephraim Lunschitz (1550 – 1619) was the Av Beis Din of Prague and one of the greatest preachers of his time. He lived in the generation of the Maharal of Prague and the Shlah and was a disciple of the Maharshal. He was the rabbi of the Tosfos Yom Tov and Rabbi Sheftil, son of the Shlah.
