Responsa Pnei Aryeh: Includes a Letter from Chaim Solomon of Philadelphia, Amsterdam 1790

Responsa, halachic rulings, elucidations and other compilations on a wide range of topics, from Rabbi Aryeh Leib Bresla, Av Beis Din Emden and Rotterdam.

This impressive first edition was printed in Amsterdam, 1790. One of the most fascinating responses in the sefer relates to a donor named Chaim from the city of Philadelphia in the United States who concurred to a request from the author and sent a donation to someone needy. At the start of the response, the author praises the philanthropist for his generous heart. "I was very happy with the donation of that man and with its good content."
This philanthropist was none other than the renowned Chaim Solomon, a Jewish American banker who had emigrated from Poland and settled in Philadelphia where he took an active role in America's War of Independence.
Rabbi Aryeh Leib Bresla was the Av Beis Din of Emden and Rotterdam and exchanged in learning with the leading scholars of his generation: Rabbi Pinchas HaLevi Horwitz, author of Hafla'ah; Rabbi Yeshaya Pick Berlin; Rabbi David Tevle, Av Beis Din of Lissa; and Rabbi Meir Posner, author of Beis Meir.
