An emotional full-page letter from R. Shimon Shkop .

‘We are melted with trepidation and worry lest our Holy Yeshiva, one of the great yeshivoth in our country will be forced to close’ – thus begins the letter. R. Shimon writes to the Agudath Harabonim in America in 1932 making a dire request for funds for his yeshiva. R. Shimon writes in detail all that transpired regarding the stability of the yeshiva.

R. Shimon Yehudah Shkop (1860-1940) was a prime student of R. Chaim Soloveichik in Volozhin to become one of the leading Roshei Yeshiva in pre-war Europe. He is known for his original understanding of the Talmud and authored Sha’arei Yosher which deals with all the novel halachic queries. Many of his students became leading Roshei yeshiva post-war including R. Shmuel Rozovsky, R. Chaim Shmuelevitz, and R. Yisrael Zev Gustman among many others.
