Sefer Odom Yashar was compiled by the famed kabbalist Harav Yaakov Tzemach based on Mahadura Basra written by Harav Chaim Vital which was hidden by the author and discovered by Rabbi Yaakov Tzemach.
This manuscript summarizes the Arizal’s discourses as chronicled by Rabbi Chaim Vital and edited by Rabbi Yaakov Tzemach.
Rabbi Yaakov Tzemach inscribes in the preface of his sefer Kol Berama:
“Sefer Odom Yashar…is the root and essence of all the discourses, rectifications and spheres…It is more valuable to me than all other books…”
Sefer Odom Yashar in the version presented here has yet to be published!
Many years later, Cracow 1895, an edition combining Odom Yashar and Kehillas Yaakov was published based on a manuscript found in the possession of the Admor Harav Chaim of Sanz.
This manuscript is very impressive, neatly arranged in two columns and written in fine Rashi script.
The title page bears the stamp of Harav Yehoshua of Ostrova: Hakatan Yehoshua son of the late Rav Maharshal zy”a of Sansanowicz (presently Ostrova) who was the author of the Toldos Odom and passed away in 1873.
Harav Yehoshua of Ostrova was lauded by his contemporary Torah luminaries. His legacy and teachings are recorded in sefer Brachah Meshuleshes. This manuscript was bequeathed to his grandson-in-law the Admor Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Kalish of Skierniewice who presumably inherited it from his father-in-law the Admor Harav Yitzchak Yaakov of Biala.
The date inscribed on the title page is 1778 (which is perhaps a printer’s error). Genazym is of the opinion that it was actually written in the early 1840s.
