“Azamer Bishvachin” by the Arizal. Rare First Edition! Yefe Nof, Venice, circa 1575.

Rare first edition! Anthology of lessons by the Arizal.

The Arizal composed poems and songs containing deep, hidden meanings for each of the three Shabbos seudos. Harav Chaim Vital in Shaar Hakavanos writes “These piyyutim are based on the wisdom of truth, with all detailed intentions of Shabbos.” The underlying concept of these poems is the paramount impact of the sanctity of Shabbos and immense spiritual rectifications that it generates in the Upper Spheres.
The piyyut “Azamer Bishvachin” mentions several rituals performed on Shabbos based on the secrets of kabbalah such as placing the menorah in the south and the table in the north; reciting a blessing on a sheaf of myrtle; and blessings on 12 loaves of challah.

These songs are sung weekly by kabbalistic sages and Chassidic congregations. Sidduro shel Shabbos by Harav Chaim of Chernowitz (Vol. 1 Shoresh 3) reveals that the purpose of this song is to sweeten judgment.

The Arizal signed his name in the acrostic of each stanza: Ani Yitzchak Luria bar Shlomo.
This sefer was printed without noting the year, which was rare for Venice publishing houses of the era, although most bibliographies assign it the publishing year of 1575.
The Arizal’s piyyutim appear on leaves 41-42 and are entitled “Outstanding Poems Like Sapphires Sung by the Pious Sage Harav Yitzchak Ashkenazy zt”l.”

This sefer also includes assorted halachic texts for contracts, prayers and poems, among them prayers for those who voyage across ocean and desert by the Ramban; a poem by Maharam Alshakar; and malkos for Erev Yom Kippur.

Venice, circa 1575. First edition. Rare! 46 leaves Page size: 19.5 cm. Good condition. New binding.
